Amazon snaps up Tesco exec Tony Hoggett to run stores worldwide

Amazon today announced it has appointed Tony Hoggett, formerly one of Tesco’s top executives, to run its physical stores.

Joining in January 2022, Hoggett will take on the role of senior vice president of physical stores and report to Dave Clark, chief executive of Amazon’s worldwide consumer business. He will be based in Seattle.

Clark said in a statement: “Over the next few months we’ll put together a plan for Tony’s transition to Amazon.”

Hoggett has been with Tesco, the UK’s biggest retailer, for over 31 years and is currently chief strategy and innovation director.

Tesco today announced Hoggett would be stepping down from his current role in a note to staff seen by City A.M. Tony Hoggett joined Tesco in 1990 and has served in a number of top roles in the UK and Asia.

He became group chief operating officer in 2018 before being appointed to the newly-created role of chief strategy and innovation officer in April this year.

Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy wrote in the memo: “I wanted to let you know that Tony Hoggett has decided to leave Tesco. 

“Tony’s career in Tesco has spanned over 31 years, during which time he has worked in various roles, most recently as Group COO and Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer. Tony has made an incredibly valuable contribution over these years, and I wish him the very best for the future.”

Murphy added that succession planning would begin in due course.
